Transport systems in the digital revolution

Abstract

Transport systems are so pervasively interacting with our life that we sometimes even forget we are benefitting from them. The impact of digitalization brings forward the possibility to understand, predict, and to some extent control transport supply and transport demand. This talk sketches opportunities to improve performance of transport systems, with particular reference to collective transport systems. Some concrete examples show the potential and/or achieved benefits of automation in transport.  Many scientific and industrial problems have to be overcome, and at the same time, many new challenges opened; in fact, the impact of automation goes well beyond the vehicles and tackles the entire transport system and how we would use it.
